I wrote this in honor of my high school mathematics teacher, Virginia Guthery, who celebrates 80 years of a most influential life\u00a0this month. Not everyone is so blessed, but many of us in fact owe a tremendous debt to one or two extraordinary teachers, people who were instrumental in leading us to a never-ending search for illumination. \nIs the worth of the true teacher.
\nThat rare soul who
\nCan lead your soul
\nTo follow the endless search
\nInto what lies below
\nAnd what soars above,
\nAnd what connects it all.<\/p>\n
\nTeacher. The one who
\nWill not accept less
\nThan the best you have
\nAnd then demands that
\nWhich is beyond your best.<\/p>\n
\nThe answer, but instead
\nPoints to a path that leads there.
\nWho imparts knowledge,
\nBut especially that knowledge
\nWhich, when unwrapped,
\nUnfolds into a map.
\nThe secret places do exist,
\nBut only for those who seek.
\nThey are not merely given.<\/p>\n
\nThe barrier between souls
\nIs infinite, but not
\nImpassable.
\nStudents trudge in rows,
\nEndless empty faces,
\nAnd the chance is small
\nThat any will encounter
\nA jewel in the classroom,
\nWill look up and see
\nA bright flare that ignites
\nTheir fire to learn,
\nThe zeal to discover.<\/p>\n
\nThat measures the worth
\nOf the ones who make
\nThe universe your doorstep.<\/p>\n
