#36: Going Out To Ely (September 3, 2011)
This week's tune is "Going Out To Ely", a
hitch-hiking song, or at least a song that has its genesis from my
hitch-hiking experiences. Songwriters always keep a couple of
hitch-hiking songs in their back pocket. Unlike Goodbye,
Wyoming, however, which is pretty upbeat and has fonder
memories, "Ely" remembers other things about the road. And I think
it wonders out loud whether some of those things were worth the
cost. Or if we can ever undo anything. My guess is "no" on both
counts. It's a solo effort, with some backing tracks I composed
using Sibelius. |
#37: Find My Next Regret (September 11, 2011)
This week's tune is "Find My Next Regret". You may not see or hear a more straight-up country song than this. A couple years ago, Shelley Heard sent me the title and the idea for this tune, as well as a couple of lyric ideas. I wrote the music and worked the ideas into this ditty. It's bars and drinking and women, and knowing that whatever happens, it's pretty certain you're gonna regret something. |
#38: Almost Knocking (September 18, 2011)
This week's tune is "Almost Knocking". Is this a scary song? Not really, but it is intended to evoke some unease, the nominal awareness that "something" waits, outside the door, in the darkness, a Nameless Something that does not wish you well. And whatever we fear, we must face. Jason plays a monster bass line. The vocal has a little edge, due to imperfect doubling (that is, me singing along with myself). lyrics |
#39: Maybe All You Need (September 25, 2011)
This week's tune is "Maybe All You
Need". A country rocker, I guess. Pretty much a hook and some nice
chords, but a lot of fun to play. A simple song that you might hear
in roadhouse someday. Assuming you frequent roadhouses. |
#40: Seven Blue Horses (October 1, 2011) This week's tune (#40 in the series) is "Seven Blue Horses". It's a blues tune, with some not so subtle political overtones. This version was recorded by Bimini Road at Berkeley Bob's Coffee House in Cullman, on Saturday, September 24. lyrics |
